Making text and colours in your videos accessible
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerUse high-contrast text (light on dark or dark on light with a background box), keep it large and on screen long enough to read twice, don’t rely on colour alone to show meaning, and avoid rapid flashing, which can affect people with photosensitive epilepsy.
Contrast and size
- White text with a dark box, or dark text on a light box.
- Large, simple fonts.
- Not over busy backgrounds.
Timing
Leave text long enough to read twice.
Colour
Red and green alone are hard for many people to tell apart. Add labels or icons.
Flashing
Avoid rapid flashing or strobing, especially full-screen. Add a warning if it can’t be avoided.
Questions
Do captions count as on-screen text?
Yes, the same contrast and timing rules help.
